  15. Syntax for Windows is a hypertext documentation software tool you use to 
  16. automatically convert, or compile, your existing and new WordPerfect files 
  17. (DOS and Windows-based!) into the Windows environment documentation and 
  18. training material you need.

  24. We think that's always the first question an announcement should answer.

  26. If you don't know what the product is sort of supposed to do, why bother 
  27. reading on?

  34. There's more to Syntax for Windows, of course.

  36. If all it did was automatically turn word processed files into Windows 
  37. hypertext documents (oh: and with integrated graphics, sticky notes, 
  38. user-defined hypertext links, and so on), it could be a real ho-hummer 
  39. by now.  After all, the big guys have all that.  Sort of...

  41. ...if you enjoy meeting new languages and 8-bit words and like doing it as 
  42. complex as you can; or, if you enjoy calling up graphics in a separate 
  43. window...

  45. ...and then doing something with that window.

  52. We don't compete against Lotus, by the way.  That's part of the proof 
  53. we're not fools.

  55. Besides, we don't think we could ask $495 per copy and keep a straight 
  56. face; or, charge $95 per copy for additional readers.

  58. You can send us $495, if you'd like.  We don't mind.  But $69 will do 
  59. fine, thank you.  And the cost per reader?  $10 each, with multiple-copy, 
  60. heavy discounts.  That way you can afford to have someone else view your 
  61. document.

  70. Syntax for Windows has only two major requirements...you must use 
  71. Windows 3.1 or higher to run Syntax for Windows and you must have at least 
  72. VGA graphics capability (640 by 480 resolution or better).  A mouse is 
  73. required to use the Reader.

  75. If you have Windows 3.1 installed and running successfully, you can use 
  76. Syntax with no additional hardware or accessories.  Neat.

  78. If you are using the Syntax Compiler to create Syntax magazines, having 
  79. a legal copy of WordPerfect--DOS or Windows version--to build your 
  80. individual documents is an unavoidable necessity.  So, too, is a good 
  81. graphic capture/conversion program, of which many are available in 
  82. commercial and shareware markets.

  84. (Oh: don't be put off by our use of the term compiler; to create a 
  85. Syntax magazine all you need are the source WordPerfect files and the 
  86. Syntax Compiler.  The Compiler does all the work necessary to create the 
  87. Syntax magazine, automatically--there is no dependency on other compilers, 
  88. programmers, or ancillary applications.)

  93. A Syntax magazine is the collection of Syntax-compiled documents and 
  94. ancillary files which are related via their hyperlink dependencies.  For 
  95. example, if your hypertext project involves a set of five discrete training 
  96. documents, and you create hypertext links which reference each of these 
  97. five documents, then Syntax treats these together as a magazine.

  102. How about employee handbooks, training manuals, review documents, 
  103. newsletters, trouble-shooting guides, an unreal chain letter, case 
  104. histories, project time-lines, corporate identity specifications, style 
  105. manuals, "coffee-table" art books, lab books, tutorials, program 
  106. demonstrations and class aids, recipe books, journals, novels, histories, 
  107. help desks, children's books and tutor guides, catalogs and flyers, 
  108. promotional material, papers and dissertations, research findings, topical
  109. comparisons, and the list really does go on...

  112. How easy is Syntax?

  114. You judge: here's an abbreviated 7-step process for quickly producing a 
  115. Syntax magazine, a complete hypertext document:

  117. Step 1: Create the document
  118.          Create a WordPerfect document and define and tag text for the 
  119.          Table of Contents and Index. 
  120.  
  121. Step 2: Define hypertext links
  122.          If you wish, define additional hypertext references using 
  123.          WordPerfect's comment function.
  124.  
  125. Step 3: Retrieve graphics
  126.          Retrieve any graphics and put them wherever you want in the 
  127.          WordPerfect document.  (And that's exactly where they'll appear 
  128.          in the magazine...)

  130. Step 4: Produce the TOC and Index
  131.          Generate the Table of Contents and Index in WordPerfect.

  133. Step 5: Save the file
  134.          Save the WordPerfect file.

  136. Step 6: Run the Compiler
  137.          Run the Syntax Compiler (usually just by selecting a filename).

  139. Step 7: Read the magazine
  140.          To read the magazine, execute the Syntax Reader.

  143. How to evaluate Syntax for Windows

  147. file-finder function to locate SYNTAX.ZIP) or many fine BBSs.
